Stargazing Bhandardara Itinerary (1 Night, 2 Days)

Join us for stargazing in Bhandardara, one of the best dark-sky spots near Mumbai and Pune. See the Milky Way, nebulae and distant galaxies through large telescopes, with astronomers guiding you through the night. Seats are limited in every batch, so book early.

How You'll Reach the Campsite: Choose Your Transport

Pick one of four options when you book. Whichever you choose, everyone meets at the same campsite by about 4:00 PM on Saturday, and the stargazing, camping, meals and trek are the same for all guests.

  1. AC bus from Mumbai: A round-trip AC bus picks you up at points across Mumbai and Thane and drops you back after the trip.
  2. AC bus from Pune: A round-trip AC bus picks you up at points in Pune and drops you back after the trip.
  3. Train to Kasara + our vehicle: Take the Central line local train to Kasara at your own cost. Our vehicle takes you from Kasara station to the campsite and back.
  4. Self-drive: Drive your own car or bike straight to the campsite. Parking is available, and we share the exact location one day before the event.

Day 1 (Saturday): Travel to Bhandardara

Important note for bus travellers

  • Your trip leader will share the bus photo, vehicle number and live location in the WhatsApp group once the bus leaves Borivali (Mumbai) or Deccan (Pune).
  • Traffic can make the bus slightly early or late, so please follow the live location once it starts moving.
  • The bus waits only 10 minutes at each pickup point, so please reach yours a few minutes early.

Option 3: Train to Kasara

  • 08:33 AM: Board the CST–Kasara local train. You can board from any station on the way (train ticket not included).
  • 11:15 AM: Meet your trip leader at Kasara station and travel to Bhandardara by our vehicle.
  • 12:00 PM: Lunch stop at a local restaurant (at your own cost).
  • 03:30 PM: Reach the campsite.

Please be on time. If you miss the train, you miss the pickup, and no refund can be given.

Option 4: Self-Drive

  • 03:30–04:00 PM: Report directly at the campsite. The location is shared one day before the event.

Day 1 (Saturday): At the Campsite

  • 03:30–04:00 PM: Arrive at the Bhandardara stargazing campsite. Check in and get your tent.
  • 04:30 PM: Welcome drink and evening snacks. Relax, take in the views and meet the astronomy team.
  • 05:00 PM: Guided walk around Samrad village and its surroundings at sunset.
  • 07:30 PM: First stargazing session. See planets, the Moon, star clusters and constellations through large telescopes.
  • 09:30 PM: Dinner at the campsite, followed by bonfire time.
  • 11:00 PM: Second stargazing session. Deep-sky objects such as galaxies and nebulae, plus astrophotography basics.
  • 01:00 AM: Midnight soup or tea. The session ends; rest in your tent under a sky full of stars.

 

Day 2 (Sunday): Dawn Sky and Sandhan Valley Trek

  • 04:30 AM: Pre-dawn stargazing session, for early risers who want to catch the morning sky.
  • 06:30 AM: Tea and breakfast at the campsite.
  • 07:30 AM: Sandhan Valley trek (optional). Explore one of India's most dramatic canyons, often called the "Valley of Shadows".
  • 01:00 PM: Return to the campsite for lunch.
  • 02:00 PM: Return journey begins.

The Sandhan Valley trek is completely optional. If you'd rather not trek for any reason, such as fitness, health, travelling with young children, or simply wanting a slow morning, you can skip it and relax at the campsite until lunch. Just let your trip leader know. The package price stays the same either way.

 

Return Journey (Sunday)

The return journey starts after lunch, around 2:00 PM, for all transport options.

  • AC bus to Mumbai: Drops you back at the same pickup points, from Kalyan to Borivali. Arrival time depends on traffic.
  • AC bus to Pune: Drops you back at Nashik Phata, Shivajinagar and Deccan. Arrival time depends on traffic.
  • Kasara guests: Our vehicle drops you at Kasara station, in time to catch a local train back to Mumbai.
  • Self-drive guests: Leave at your convenience after lunch.

Your trip leader will share live location updates on the way back as well.

Your Camping Stay at Bhandardara

You'll spend the night in a tent at our private stargazing campsite in Samrad village, near Sandhan Valley. It's set up for stargazing: a dark observation area, a separate telescope zone, and plenty of open space.

Tent camping

  • Each tent fits 2 adults and 1 child, and comes with a mat and a warm blanket.
  • Tents are allotted at check-in. Families, couples and friends stay together.
  • Solo travellers share a tent with another solo guest of the same gender.

Campsite facilities

  • 6 clean toilets (Indian and Western), with separate ones for ladies and gents
  • 2 changing rooms
  • A dining area serving hygienic vegetarian village food
  • A dedicated telescope zone and dark observation area

Stargazing Disclaimer

Stargazing depends on nature. How much you see, including the Milky Way, depends on the weather, cloud cover, the moon phase, light pollution and how clear the air is that night. These are beyond our control, so Milky Way visibility can't be guaranteed.

For the best chance of a dark sky and the Milky Way, choose a new-moon batch (marked 🌑 in the dates list).

Stargazing tip: Bring a torch with a red light, or cover a regular torch with red cellophane. White light ruins everyone's night vision, while red light lets your eyes stay adjusted to the dark so you can see fainter stars.

Things to Carry for Astrophotography at Bhandardara

Planning to photograph the Milky Way or star trails? Bring these:

  1. Tripod for your phone or camera: Night shots need long exposures, so your device must stay perfectly still. A tripod with a ball head makes angles easier to adjust.
  2. DSLR, mirrorless camera, or a phone with Manual/Pro mode: You'll need to control shutter speed, ISO and focus yourself to capture the night sky.
  3. Remote shutter or intervalometer: Avoids camera shake and lets you shoot star trails automatically.
  4. Extra camera batteries: Cold nights drain batteries faster than usual.
  5. Torch with spare batteries: For finding your way and changing settings in the dark. Use red light near the telescopes.

  • 4 to 7 days before the event: 50% refund
  • 3 days or less before the event: no refund
  • No-show: no refund

How to cancel: Call us to request a cancellation. The number of days is counted from the day you inform us.

Transfers

  • Tickets can't be moved to another date in place of a cancellation.
  • Tickets can't be transferred to another person in place of a cancellation.

If Treks and Trails cancels the event, you'll receive a refund of the event amount you paid.

1. Who can join Stargazing Bhandardara?
Anyone aged 5 and above can join: families, couples, friends, solo travellers and corporate groups. You don't need any knowledge of astronomy or astrophotography. Our astronomers explain everything from scratch. The sky is for everyone.

2. How far is Bhandardara from Mumbai and Pune?
Bhandardara is about 185 km from Mumbai (around 4 hours by road) and about 190 km from Pune.

3. How do I reach the campsite?

  • AC bus from Mumbai: pickups from Borivali to Kalyan.
  • AC bus from Pune: pickups at Deccan, Shivajinagar and Nashik Phata.
  • Kasara option: a faster, budget-friendly choice. Take the Central line local train to Kasara, and our jeep takes you to the campsite and back.

4. What if I miss the bus or the Kasara pickup?
You'll need to reach the campsite on your own. Missed pickups are treated as no-shows, and no refund is given. Please reach your pickup point a few minutes early.

5. Can you see the Milky Way from Bhandardara?
Yes. Bhandardara is far from city lights, so on clear, moonless nights the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye. For the best chance, choose a new-moon batch. Visibility still depends on the weather and cloud cover on the night.

6. What is the best time for stargazing near Mumbai and Pune?
The season runs from October to May, after the monsoon clouds clear:

  • October–November: great for Saturn and the Andromeda Galaxy.
  • December–January: bring the Orion Nebula and the Geminids meteor shower.
  • April–May: the season for the Milky Way core.

7. How will the stargazing sessions be?
An expert astronomer leads every session, guiding you to multiple celestial objects through large, powerful telescopes. There are three sessions through the night: 7:30 PM, 11:00 PM and 4:30 AM. You'll also learn constellation stories and astrophotography basics.

8. What can we expect to see through the telescope?
Planets, the Moon, star clusters, nebulae, galaxies and more. Exactly what's visible depends on the season and the moon phase. On special batches you can also watch meteor showers such as the Leonids and Geminids.

9. What if the weather isn't suitable for stargazing?
Stargazing depends entirely on the weather. If clouds or rain make it unsuitable, the session may have to be paused or stopped, and the organisers can't be held responsible for the weather. Our team will arrange alternative activities to suit the situation, and the camping, meals and trek go ahead as planned.

10. What is the stay like?
You'll get a tent that fits two adults and one child comfortably. It comes with a foam mat, a pillow and a warm blanket. Tents are on a twin- or triple-sharing basis, and solo travellers share with another guest of the same gender.

11. What amenities are available at the campsite?
The campsite has:

13. How cold does it get at night?
Night temperatures at the campsite can drop to around 10°C in winter. Carry a warm jacket, socks and an extra blanket if you feel the cold easily.

14. Is there mobile network at the campsite?
Mobile network is minimal or unavailable at the campsite and nearby areas. Let your family know in advance, and carry some cash.

15. Is the Sandhan Valley trek compulsory?
No, the trek is optional. If you'd rather not trek for any reason, you can relax at the campsite until lunch. Just let your trip leader know.

16. Is the trek difficult?
Not at all. It's a beginner-level trek. Any adventurous, reasonably fit person aged 5 and above can do it. Wearing proper shoes is mandatory.

17. Is the trip safe for women and solo travellers?
Yes. The campsite is private, with separate toilets for ladies and gents, and trip leaders stay with the group throughout the event.

What You Can See: Night Sky Guide for Bhandardara (October to June)

Stargazing season near Mumbai and Pune runs from October to early June, after the monsoon clouds clear and before they return. Every month brings a different sky.

October – November

  • Planets: Saturn and its rings, at their brightest this season. Jupiter, Mars and Venus appear before dawn.
  • Through our telescopes: the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), Triangulum Galaxy, Double Cluster, Ring Nebula, Dumbbell Nebula and the Hercules Globular Cluster.
  • With the naked eye: the Milky Way arching overhead through Cygnus and Cassiopeia, the Pleiades rising, and the Andromeda Galaxy as a faint smudge of light.

December – January

  • Planets: Saturn in the evening, Jupiter rising earlier each night, and Venus at dawn.
  • Through our telescopes: the Orion Nebula (M42), Pleiades, Crab Nebula, the Auriga star clusters (M36, M37, M38), M35 and the Beehive Cluster.
  • With the naked eye: Orion, Taurus and Gemini, Sirius (the brightest star in the sky), Canopus (the second-brightest, rarely seen from northern countries), and the winter Milky Way.

February – March

  • Planets: Jupiter and Mars at their best, both near opposition in February 2027. Venus shines at dawn.
  • Through our telescopes: Jupiter's cloud bands and four moons, Mars, the Orion Nebula, the Beehive Cluster and the Leo galaxies.
  • With the naked eye: Orion setting, Leo rising, and the Milky Way core starting to appear before dawn.

April – May

  • Planets: Jupiter in the evening, with Saturn returning before dawn.
  • Through our telescopes: Omega Centauri (the biggest globular cluster in the sky), the Whirlpool Galaxy, Leo Triplet, the Virgo galaxy cluster, and Bode's and Cigar galaxies.
  • With the naked eye: the Southern Cross and Alpha Centauri low in the southern sky, and the Milky Way core rising after midnight.

Late May – Early June

  • Planets: Saturn before dawn.
  • Through our telescopes: the Lagoon, Trifid, Eagle and Omega Nebulae, the M22 globular cluster, and the Butterfly and Ptolemy Clusters.
  • With the naked eye: the Milky Way core at its brightest over Scorpius and Sagittarius. This is the best season for Milky Way photography.

All Season

  • Through our telescopes: the Moon's craters and mountains, double stars and colourful stars.
  • With the naked eye: satellites, International Space Station passes, shooting stars, constellations and their stories.

Tip: To see the Milky Way, choose a new-moon batch. For planets and the Moon's craters, any batch works.
