Overview

The Garbett Plateau Trek is one of the Sahyadris' best-kept secrets — a sweeping grassland plateau on the western edge of Matheran that rewards you with uninterrupted 360-degree views over Bhivpuri, Karjat, and the surrounding Sahyadri ranges. Unlike the busy tourist points of Matheran, Garbett stays wild and quiet, making it a favourite among trekkers who want raw natural beauty close to Mumbai.

The trek runs in two distinct experiences:

  • Monsoon Day Trek (June–September): A "walk in the clouds" through waterfalls, streams, and rolling green meadows, wrapped in mist and cool Sahyadri winds.
  • Night & Sunrise Trek (October - May): A pre-dawn climb under the stars to catch a breathtaking sunrise over the valley from the open plateau, where there's little tree cover to block the view.

Either way, Garbett delivers one of the most rewarding plateau experiences near Mumbai.

Frequently Asked Questions

This FAQ is cleaner than the Lohagad/Visapur ones, but it has the "Dhom Dam" error repeated 5 times in the detailed itinerary — and interestingly, the text itself reveals the correct name: "Dhom Dam... is also known as Bhivpuri Dam." That confirms it's Bhivpuri Dam, and "Dhom Dam" (the Wai/Satara one) is wrong. I've corrected all instances. I've also folded in the keyword gaps from your GSC data (height, distance, how to reach, difficulty, trek time, night trek). One fact still needs your team: the plateau height — the source never states it, so I've left it as "verify."

Frequently Asked Questions — Garbett Plateau Trek

Where is Garbett Plateau located? Garbett Plateau is on the western edge of Matheran, near Bhivpuri Road in the Karjat region of Raigad district, Maharashtra. The trek starts at Bhivpuri Road station and ends at Matheran's Dasturi Naka.

How difficult is the Garbett Plateau trek? It's an easy-to-medium grade trek, but a long one — the climb takes about 4 hours one way, with exposed, slippery sections and low visibility in the monsoon. Reasonable fitness and good trekking shoes are essential.

How long does the Garbett trek take? About 4 hours to ascend to the plateau. It's a full-day, point-to-point trek starting at Bhivpuri and ending at Matheran's Dasturi Naka.

How do I reach the Garbett Plateau trek? Take a Karjat-bound local train and get down at Bhivpuri Road station, where you meet our trek leader. The trail climbs to the plateau and descends to Dasturi Naka in Matheran, from where shared taxis run to Neral station for your return train.

Is there a Garbett Plateau night trek? Yes. The Garbett night and sunrise trek runs during the winter and summer months, when clear skies make for spectacular star-filled nights and sunrise views from the plateau.

What is the best time to do the Garbett trek? The monsoon (June to September) is the most popular time for the day trek, when waterfalls flow and the plateau turns green and misty. Because there's little tree cover, daytime summer treks can be hot — which is why the night and sunrise trek is preferred in summer and winter.

Is food available on the trek? No food is available at the base or on the plateau. There are general stores near the start where you can buy dry snacks, so carry a packed lunch and enough water.

Will I get drinking water on the trek? You pass a village during the trek where you can refill your bottle with well water. Still, carry 2 to 3 litres to start.

Are toilets available? Toilets are available at the breakfast restaurant near the start, before the trek. There are none along the trail or on the plateau.

Is parking available at Bhivpuri? You can drive to Bhivpuri Road station and park at your own risk; locals may charge a small fee. Note the trek ends at Neral, so you'd need to return to Bhivpuri for your vehicle.

Is the Garbett trek good for kids? Children below 15 are allowed with parental supervision, but as it's a long, exposed climb, it suits older children with some trekking experience rather than young kids.

Is the trek safe for solo and female trekkers? Yes. Many solo female trekkers join us. We maintain a roughly 6:4 male-to-female ratio per batch, with a female trek leader whenever available.

Is Jain food available? Yes — only vegetarian, home-cooked local food is served, and Jain food is available if you mention it in the comments while booking.

Is there phone connectivity on the trek? Connectivity is limited for most networks. Carry a rain cover for your phone in the monsoon, and a power bank, as there's no electricity to charge devices.

Can we smoke, drink alcohol, or play music on the trek? No. Smoking, alcohol, and drugs are strictly prohibited, and anyone caught will be asked to leave. Playing music on earphones or Bluetooth speakers is not allowed while trekking.

How do I book and pay? Book online via the "Book Now" button with 100% upfront payment (UPI, NEFT, IMPS, Google Pay, or the payment gateway). Cash and on-the-spot payments aren't accepted, as transport is arranged in advance.

Garbett Plateau Trek — Detailed Trail Guide

Garbett Point is one of the most scenic spots near Dasturi Naka on the edge of Matheran, and the Garbett Plateau monsoon trek is a favourite among hikers from Mumbai, Thane, and Pune. Because there's little tree cover on the plateau, the rainy season is the most popular time to trek — daytime summer climbs can be hot, while winter and summer are better suited to the night and sunrise version. It's an easy-to-medium trek through Matheran's waterfalls and streams, a true "walk in the clouds."

Board the train as listed in the itinerary and meet our trek leader at Bhivpuri Road railway station. You'll see plenty of fellow hikers and picnickers getting off here — Bhivpuri is a popular monsoon spot, with many waterfalls flowing down from the Matheran hills. From the station, we walk to a restaurant for breakfast and to use the toilets before setting off, as there are none on the trail.

After breakfast, we head towards the Bhivpuri Dam (also known locally as the dam lake) viewpoint, picking up dry snacks or refilling water bottles on the way. Bhivpuri Dam is popular with campers in the winter and summer months. At the dam lake viewpoint, the trek leader gives route instructions, leads warm-up exercises and a group introduction, and the climb begins.

Several routes lead up to Garbett Hill; we take the Diksal Waterfall (Ashane) route. Keeping the dam on your right, you'll pass beautiful waterfalls and cross small, slippery streams, with rice fields lining the path where farmers work through the monsoon. After the Diksal Waterfall — busy on weekends — we cross another stream and climb towards Sagachiwadi, a small hillside village where you can refill water and rest. Local guides here can help with the next stretch.

From here the climb steepens through green grassland, high winds, and swirling fog, with the dam now behind you. Friendly local dogs often accompany trekkers, helping scout the path. This uphill section is challenging — exposed in places, slippery, and low on visibility in the rain — so good trekking shoes are essential. At the top, you reach the broad Garbett Plateau, which extends to Garbett Point, offering superb views over Bhivpuri and Karjat on both sides — the highlight of the trek.

From Garbett Point, two routes lead to Matheran's Dasturi Naka: a shorter shortcut along an exposed ridge (with a sharp drop), and a longer, safer route through a village inside Matheran. Both end at Dasturi Naka. Once in Matheran, mind your bags — the monkeys here grab water bottles and anything hanging off a backpack, so a rain cover over your bag helps. From Dasturi Naka, we board a shared taxi to Neral station (about 30–45 minutes), where you can catch your train home to Mumbai or Karjat.
